This is Part 4 in our series on America’s Top Ten Favorite Dogs.
Sometimes called the English Bulldog or British Bulldog, this breed originated in England and was used long ago to drive cattle to the market and to compete in a bloody sport called bullbaiting. The Bulldog we know today exhibits none of the ferocious behavior of his ancestors. Despite a tough outward appearance, they have a sweet and gentle disposition.
- Although low to the ground, they are wide and muscular with stocky legs and jaws that are massive and strong.
- They have a wrinkled face with a distinctive underbite and a droopy upper lip.
- Because of their facial structure, they can not tolerate the heat and humidity and should not be left outdoors.
- They are low-endurance housedogs who love a relaxed lifestyle and a routine of eat, sleep, belly rub, repeat.
- Bulldogs love people and are good with children, but they won’t actively play outside with them. They are not fond of exercise but need to be taken for a short walk every day or they’ll put on weight due to inactivity and a love of food.
- They can be stubborn and persistent and are masters at getting what they want. Their sad, pouty faces can get them most anything they want.
FIVE INTERESTING FACTS
- They are one of the most popular mascots for universities and sports teams.
- Bulldogs are prone to sleep apnea, are greedy eaters and will over eat if allowed.
- They are not well-suited for water and can be in danger of drowning due to their body build.
- 80% of Bulldogs are delivered by C-section because of their large heads.
- Bulldogs are attention magnets wherever they go, with a face everyone loves!
